Meet a Maker – Kangaroo Island Living Honey’s Shawn & Anthea Hinves, passionate Kangaroo Islanders and Apiarists.
Tell us a little about your business?
“We are a small, family-run business – myself, Shawn, my wife, Anthea, and our five children. My main role is the Apiarist (Bee Keeper) and Manager. I also take care of all the deliveries and farmers’ markets. Anthea does the bookkeeping and accounts, as well as all the hands-on manufacturing of our non-edible products such as lip balms, goat’s milk soaps, propolis, candles and other beeswax products.
I started bee keeping as a hobby in 1998 and soon realised that this was my passion. I wanted to learn more about them, so I continued to build our hive numbers each year and Kangaroo Island Living Honey was born! We now run between 180 – 200 productive hives and we are still building. We extract up to 20 ton of organic honey on a good year.”
Why do you do what you do?
“Apart from our honey, Anthea started experimenting with making our own soaps and creams. Our children had problems with acne and eczema, so after some research we began production using our organic bee products and goat’s milk.
Our aim is to produce products of a high standard as naturally as possible, but at an affordable price, so everyone can enjoy them.”
“We currently sell our products locally on the Island, and to around fifty stores throughout South Australia, or directly from us. We cover Adelaide’s northern, central and southern suburbs, Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills and right down south as far as Victor Harbor.” A list of stores can be found on our website: www.kilivinghoney.com.au.
Where are you favourite spots to eat on Kangaroo Island?
“We love to eat at The Penny (Penneshaw Hotel). It’s just a lovely setting and location and the food is great! If we are having takeaway we love eating at the fish and chip shop next to the Caltex servo in Kingscote. Beautiful fresh seafood and the service is great also.”
What’s your favourite KI location to visit and why?
“Pennington Bay is our favourite location here on the island. It’s close to home and is a magnificent beach. We swim in the rock pool, fish off the reef and the beach, body surf, snorkel, explore and run along the beach. We find it caters to all that we do and the whole family loves it!”
